Here are some answers to our most frequently asked questions from new patients:
What will happen on my first massage visit?
On your first visit, you will complete a medical case history form. These forms will need to be updated annually. This information, as well as any conversation between you and your therapist, will remain confidential. Prior to the massage treatment, an initial assessment will be completed, along with various tests to determine the condition of your muscles and joints. Consent must be voluntarily given at the beginning of the massage, and can be withdrawn at any time. Your massage therapist will then develop a treatment plan with you, that is personalized to your body’s needs.
Will my insurance company cover my massage treatments?
Massage therapy is not covered by OHIP, but many private insurance companies cover treatment provided by a Registered Massage Therapist as part of their extended health care plans. Please consult your policy. Depending on your provider, we may also be able to offer direct billing.
How will a massage feel?
This will depend on a client’s individual goals for the treatment. A general relaxation massage tends to have a lighter pressure applied. If a deep tissue treament is requested, it is always encouraged for the client to keep in communication with your massage therapist, as to minimize any post massage soreness. Many massage therapists use a form of Swedish massage, which is often a baseline for practitioners. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Do not hesitate to ask questions or mention if you feel any discomfort.
How will I feel after the massage therapy treatment?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience a decrease in intensity from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is therefore recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage. A hot Epsom salt bath is also encouraged following your massage treatment. This will aid in the elimination of toxins, while also helping to prevent any muscle soreness from the massage itself.
If I’m pregnant, how late into my pregnancy can I receive massage treatments?
It is safe for you to receive massage treatments throughout your full pregnancy. Your safety and comfort is my priority, therefore it is very important to make note of any changes in your health since your pregnancy. The positioning and pillowing on the massage table can be altered to meet you needs, and some modifications may be put into effect. The amount of pressure, areas treated, the use of hydrotherapy, and specific techniques, all may be presented slightly different. Any changes or precautions to your massage treatment will be discussed thoroughly with you prior to your treatment.
What are your massage rates?
My rates depend on the length and type of treatment. For more information, please refer to Massage Therapy Fees and Hot Stone Massage Fees.
